The Nobel Prize: Politics and Preference

ALEMANIA - NOBEL LITERATURA

Swedish chemist and innovator, Alfred Nobel, is said to have created the Nobel Prizes in response to a damning obituary which criticised  him for creating dynamite. The obituary (accidentally published in a French newspaper before Nobel had actually died), referred to him as “the merchant of death” and stated that he ” became rich by finding more ways to kill people, faster than ever before”. This led Nobel to the decision to create the prizes, and upon his death he left his entire fortune of approx. $250 million to fund prizes for work in physical science, chemistry, medical science or physiology. A fourth prize is awarded for  literary work “in an ideal direction” and the fifth is for the futherance of peace on an international level.

Oktoberfest Wiesn!

Despite having been here in Munich for over two years, I managed to remain an Oktoberfest virgin until yesterday
